Finally!!
I’m so excited– YouTube is the best!
I finally found a copy of what has always been one of my favorite commercials. It may seem like nothing now, but back in 1985, it spoke to me in some Blade Runner-ish sort of way that I can’t explain beyond the obvious visual resemblance. Ever since, I can STILL recite every line from it. As part of Pepsi’s “Choice of a New Generation” campaign in the mid to late 80’s, it was naturally full of big special effects (for the time) and ambitious brand messaging. I loved it and still love it. It’s the cola equivalent to the Apple 1984 commercial (it was also a Super Bowl spot, so that might explain it).
Seeing it again after all these years, it’s even better, despite a more visceral dislike of Pepsi than I had then (I never cared for the stuff), but it’s still damn good. It’s also worth pointing out that this campaign even reached out into the movies, most notably in Back to the Future.
It’s sad, in a way, to see that Pepsi has yet to rekindle a campaign that so creatively taps into the cultural and artistic influences of a decade, but perhaps that’s just because I’m older now. But somehow, I don’t think the smiley can holds any more sway over the tweens of today than it does the adults…
Hudson river pilot IS a hero
Last night’s 60 Minutes episode focused heavily on the crew of the US Airways flight that ditched in the Hudson river last month. While the show was very Dateline-esque for 60M standards, it was still moving to see and hear from the people who kept their cool and saved the lives of all the passengers. Particularly poignant was the moment when the crew met with the passengers. It was a truly emotionally intense moment as passenger after passenger hugged pilot Sully and thanked him for their lives.
We’re making blog babies!
Hey peeps– we’re workin’ on setting up our rad new digs here at WAF, and we ask that you be a little patient as we whip things into shape. Commenting is available, but the UE is lame-o right now. One of the many things left to do. The design is super-duper-McSweeney’s, and that’s the way we like it.
All your old fav posts are still here in case you miss them. In the meantime, shoot any suggestions over to my first name at wordsarefun.org. So hope you like, and update your feed while you’re at it.
Good news, everyone!
Tee hee! I love seeing voice actors do their characters. It always creeps me out a little, then delights me.
