Y2K7DST
This weekend heralds the end of Daylight-Saving Time. Next year, it will begin early and end a week later after Congress passed the Energy Policy Act of 2005. What they didn't realize, however, is that computers are programmed for DST based on the OLD formula. The result of changing the formula?
Y2K7DST.
Yes, now systems have to be reprogrammed and who knows what sort of havoc this will wreak on the world's technological infrastructure. Most likely, nothing at all. But it's hilarious that nobody thought about what a headache this would be for our poor lowly programmers.
My hosting company recently mused on this subject (and used pictures!) in a hilarious post on their blog. It's worth reading, as is everything those guys send out.
So start stockpiling your water and guns now, folks! The end is nigh!!

And, as someone far cleverer than I pointed out last year, it's a real fuckjob for anyone who still has a VCR. (Not that we should be catering to those simpletons.) With some new programming and/or downloadable service packs, computers can be taught the new rules, but your VCR clock (or any other electronic device that normally tracks DST for you) isn't going to know about the new system. Thanks a lot, worst congress ever!
I'm glad you're lovin' the DreamHost blog as much as I am!
